About Derek
I've always been a teacher in some way throughout my life as a professional, I started as a flight instructor teaching students all their academic papers as well as the fun part, how to fly a plane through the sky. I've been a general manager in large companies where I have had to develop and train many individuals through their career progression and somehow ended up back at university where I found my true passion with computer science and statistics where I have also helped many students start their journey as a lab demonstrator, so some would say teaching is in my blood.

During my time at the University of Otago, I was a lab demonstrator for many Computer Science papers for first and second-year students. Being a lab demonstrator with around 30 students per lab, and across multiple lab streams, I have come across many different learning styles for individual students. Some students learn through textbooks, some through pictures and diagrams, and some through understanding the fundamental reasoning for why we do something. I have adapted to all of these ways and always structured my teaching style to best suit the individual in a constructive way. A lesson would usually last an hour, but if necessary, longer is always fine. I feel that in an hour you can get through all the questions the student has without throwing too much information to handle at once. This timeframe also allows the student to find things out for themselves after the lesson which will always lead to more questions, and I believe the more questions the better. My lessons can be for students of all ages wanting to learn the fundamentals of programming in many languages and also both programming and statistics at the university level.
