About Joshua
I'm a recent graduate of UC Berkeley, where I earned my Bachelor's degree in History with a 3.9 GPA and Phi Beta Kappa honors. My studies culminated in a 30-page thesis, in which I utilized many of the same methods and approaches I now teach my students.
My teaching methods are drawn from my own experience throughout my academic career, in which I've developed a keen sense of how to not only excel in an academic setting, but also gained important life skills in the process.
I absolutely love the process of learning, but I understand that not every student feels the same way, and that's okay. Beyond the specific subject I work on with my students, understanding their interests and individuality is crucial for helping them engage with the subject on their own terms.
I look forward to hearing from you!

As a tutor, I find it important for my students to develop a personal connection to the material, be it studying for an exam, writing an essay for class, or even expressing themselves both persuasively and honestly on a college application.
For writing, I help my students understand the building blocks of how persuasive writing functions, leading with a focus on the "why" and not just the "what" when it comes to their work.
In preparation for an exam, I help my students understand the scope of a subject, instead of simply memorizing facts. Once students can see the whole picture, individual facts stop being random things to memorize and start fitting into a framework, which makes the material dramatically easier to absorb and retain.
Learning is easiest when you have a passion for the material. I like to understand my students on a personal level, and help them grow a passion for the subject based on their own unique and valuable perspective.
I work with students studying History at the middle school, high school, and undergraduate levels, as well as college applicants working on personal statements.
