About Ben

I earned a Master of Science in Medical Engineering (Devices) from Dartmouth and became an expert in MATLAB - I completed graduate coursework in classes requiring the programming language and worked on a variety of research projects (both as a lead researcher and as a mentor) that required MATLAB coding. I have a comfort with the language and this comfort allows me to explain key concepts to others confidently and legitimately.

  • Can you tell us about your first experience using a computer?

My first experience using a computer was in a computer lab in elementary school. We had early generation Macintoshes.
  • What is the technological evolution that has marked you most and what will be, in your eyes, a turning point in this field?

The technological evolution that has marked me most would be artificial intelligence. It enhances my teaching: I can explain a concept in mathematics using my expertise in tandem with the knowledge being more easily accessible via AI. A turning point in this field will be when there are widely agreed on limits set on AI, as it does give misleading answers. I myself have seen many errors in the details of its knowledge, although its breadth is impressive.
  • Explain your expertise, your interest in it and, more broadly, its importance in the computer world.

My expertise is mathematics. I have a Master's in Medical Engineering. I've worked in the medical device industry in the past. I earned my Master's through a thesis using ideas in linear algebra which are the basis of Matlab, therefore my expertise is in these fields, in addition to all foundational mathematics. My interest in linear algebra is for a simple reason: I think it's the most elegant form of mathematics with deep ideas at its core. It's of major importance in the computer world - matrices are a common way of storing information, large data sets (which I worked with in my Master's) are manageable using linear algebra, and images are compressed and sent to friends and family via pixelation and functions in linear algebra.
  • Do so-called 'visionaries', such as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg inspire you or do you have other role models?

Of so-called 'visionaries' Bill Gates inspires me because I think he has it right regarding to what extent technology can improve human lives. I am no Bill Gates, but as someone who has worked in an industry with a mission of directly improving the quality of human life, I think, yeah, he knows where the limits are.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

A valuable anecdote related to my days at school would be from graduate school. I remember I was mentoring an undergraduate on his research. He was stuck on a Matlab problem and really frustrated. He came to me and I got him going to where he could visualize his data in ways he didn't think possible. He exclaimed, "I'm a boss!" which was gratifying. He's an interventional radiologist now.
  • What would you say to an uncomfortable person in front of a screen who says that "IT is too complicated"?

If someone is uncomfortable, and I have many clients who have started this way, I say "mathematics are consistent rules. Sometimes, the subject can seem complex or fancy, but what that really is would be many of the 'building blocks' of math put together. The rules are always the same." What could be more comforting than that level of consistency in a subject?
  • What are your other passions, related or non-related to computers?

Another passion of mine is that I enjoy playing golf. It's a rules based game that values consistency and logical thinking. A good fit for someone like me.
  • What makes you a Superprof in IT?

What makes me a Superprof in Matlab, linear algebra, algebra and all foundations of mathematics is really something I haven't mentioned before but my empathy. I'm an empathetic person and it makes me a good teacher. Thanks and take care!
