About Matt
I am a professional musician that operates within the Greater Boston Area. The bulk of my professional work is within the realm of Musical theater, where adaptability and fast learning are key. I primarily play Electric Bass, but also have many years of experience doubling on upright bass. I also perform in "GB" Bands, which are more traditional cover bands for settings like weddings and live music at restaurants.
I am a fan of all music and think that every style and genre has something to bring to the table. Personally, I listen to a combination of Classic Rock, Jazz, Folk and "Indie" Music on a daily basis.

I structure my lessons around what the student wants to learn.
For example, if a student approaches me and says "I want to learn "Another One Bites the Dust", we will first listen and discuss broad concepts of the tune, i.e; "Feel", "Instrumentation", "Emotion" etc.
Then, we will learn the bassline and various ways to play it on the instrument.
After that, we will talk about the form of the song and how to understand the tune on a level beyond just "playing the bassline".
Beyond that, if the student desires, we can discuss the theory behind the tune to really understand what is happening on a fundamental level.
Depending on the student's skill level this concept is also interspersed with general foundational techniques on the instrument (Scales, Arpeggios, Right-Hand Techniques, Bowings, Chord voicings, etc) to provide a wide-reaching and thorough understanding of the instrument and its role within music.
In short, I try to eke as many concepts out of the questions a student may have in order to provide a foundational understanding both of music as a whole, and the bass' role within the music.
