About Joe

I have a BA in biology and a minor in education from UC Berkeley. I have a PhD in ecology and evolutionary biology from UC Santa Cruz. I have worked for an elite tutoring company for several years and have also worked in many low-income/disadvantaged school districts helping students master standardized college admissions tests. I've also helped many high school and college students with general math skills, genetics, AP biology, and AP Environmental Studies courses. I am a college professor specializing in inquiry-based field studies in biology and other environmental sciences. I truly care about my students as people and am very invested in helping them solve their problems and reach their academic goals.

About the lesson

My lessons are responsive to student needs and concerns. I rely on my empathy for student concerns and my years of experience as an educator to dynamically adjust each lesson to focus on the the most urgent and consequential impediment to student progress. A typical lesson will start with checking on a student's recent self-study or practice with the topic, including their recent struggles. We may then review that work and use it as a spring board to a lesson that explores the relevant topics and techniques to master the topic. I have worked with students whose test scores range from 30th to 98th percentile on SATs and ACTs and I am an expert at adapting my approach and lessons to suit student needs.
