About Karsten
I studied Applied Linguistics & Translation and British Literature & Culture Studies at the University Leipzig (also 3 years of Philosophy at FSU Jena:), now I am working as an 'Outdoor Pursuits Instructor' in Wales. In Leipzig I have worked as an English tutor for A-Level students, for about 3 months before I came to the UK.

It is through language that we learn about the world. The main focus of language learning, therefore, should not predominantly focus on grammatical structures which are either right or wrong. But rather on understanding language learning as an ongoing process through which we learn about and interact with the world. Depending on the speakers level of proficiency, after being equipped with the basic grammatical structures and vocabulary, language learning should focus on getting confident in ones own conversation skills and personal interests, other than language itself. The learner should be prepared to inform him/herself and to communicate with others in a foreign language about topics of interest, rather than mindlessly reproducing memorized standard phrases like "Guten Tag. Wie geht es Ihnen heute?". In other words: Language learning should be fun and interesting.
Therefore, instead of sticking to one particular method, I'd prefer to tailor lessons around the individuals skill level, interests, and learning preferences. Most importantly create an awareness that you don't have to learn a language before you can use. But rather understanding language as a set of tools which gets larger and better only as we use it.
