About Romi
I am a Computer Programming tutor with 9 years of experience and a BSc in Computer Science. I have taught over 370 students across the full spectrum of programming experience and goal, from students writing their first line of code to experienced developers adding new skills. My nine years of teaching experience have produced an unusually refined understanding of exactly how programming understanding develops, what obstacles arise at each stage, and what specific instructional interventions address each obstacle most effectively. This accumulated pedagogical knowledge is the most valuable thing I bring to my teaching and I draw on it every single session. My programming teaching across nine years has produced a precisely calibrated understanding of the specific conceptual transitions that are genuinely difficult for students learning to programme — from sequential to conditional thinking, from loops to recursion, from procedural to object-oriented design — and I address each of these transitions with specific, carefully developed explanations and exercises rather than assuming they will occur naturally with sufficient exposure. I teach problem decomposition as the primary programming skill — the ability to take a complex problem, break it into smaller sub-problems, solve each sub-problem, and combine the solutions — because this is the skill that transfers across all programming languages and contexts and that most distinguishes effective programmers from those who can only implement given designs. My curriculum includes significant pair programming between myself and each student because the experience of programming with a more experienced partner who narrates their own thinking — why they chose this data structure, why they're concerned about this edge case, why they're naming this variable this way — develops programming judgement in ways that solo practice cannot. Testing and debugging are given equal curricular status to writing code because the ability to verify that code is correct and to diagnose why it is not are professional skills of equal importance to writing code in the first place. My approach to each programming language connects its specific design philosophy and typical use cases to the broader landscape of programming languages, because students who understand why different languages exist and what they are optimised for make better tool choices and develop more flexible programming thinking. My teaching goal across nine years is a programmer who can sit down with an unfamiliar problem in an unfamiliar language and make meaningful progress.
