About Ashley

About Me - Who I am

I’m a Drama teacher based in Trafford, trained through a PGCE with QTS, and I currently teach Drama in a secondary school. I’m also an examiner and moderator for the BTEC Tech Award in Performing Arts — so I mark real coursework and know exactly what separates a good answer from a top-mark one. Before all this, I spent over two decades in a completely different career, which is why I don’t rush explanations or assume anyone should “just get it” — I’ve worked with all sorts of people, under pressure, where clear communication mattered.

Why I teach

I got into drama teaching because I saw how much it changes people — not just their grades, but how they carry themselves. A student who couldn’t get through a monologue without going red can end up standing tall and speaking with real confidence. That shift matters to me more than the marks, even though the marks matter too.

Because I examine and moderate the BTEC Tech Award, I know exactly what’s being looked for behind the scenes — the language used, the common mistakes that cost marks, and the small changes that push a response up a grade. For GCSE Drama, I bring the same exam-focused approach through my classroom teaching experience. My job is to translate all of that into lessons that actually make sense, so you leave every session clearer than when you started.

GCSE Drama and BTEC Tech Award in Performing Arts — taught and examined.

I trained as a secondary Drama teacher (PGCE with QTS) and currently teach Drama at a school in Trafford in the North West. I'm also an examiner and moderator for the BTEC Tech Award in Performing Arts — so I mark real coursework and know exactly what separates a good answer from a top-mark one.

Before all this, I spent over two decades in a completely different career, which is why I don't rush explanations or assume anyone should "just get it" — I've worked with people from all walks of life, under pressure, where clear communication really mattered.

I tutor GCSE Drama and BTEC Tech Award in Performing Arts (Level 1/2), along with Functional Skills, text analysis, creative writing, and spoken English (oracy). I also help students prepare for auditions at specialist drama schools, working on monologues, technique, and interview confidence.

Whether your child needs to build confidence speaking in front of others, tighten up written coursework, sharpen their analytical skills, or is preparing for an audition, I can help. Because I examine and moderate the BTEC Tech Award myself, I know the language used, the common mistakes that cost marks, and the small changes that push a response up a grade — and I'll translate all of that into lessons that actually make sense. For GCSE Drama, I bring the same exam-focused approach, drawing on my classroom teaching experience and knowledge of the mark schemes.

What lessons actually look like:

For GCSE Drama, we'll break down set texts and past exam questions together, practise structuring written responses around the mark scheme, and work on performance analysis and evaluation skills — the areas that most often cost marks if left unpractised.

For BTEC Tech Award in Performing Arts, we'll go component by component: developing skills and techniques, applying them in a workshop performance, and — the part most students find hardest — the written evaluation. I'll show you exactly what moderators are looking for, because I do that job myself, and we'll work through real examples of what separates a Level 1 answer from a Level 2 (Distinction).

For students preparing for a specialist drama school audition, we'll select and rehearse monologues suited to the school and student, work on performance technique and stage presence, and practise handling interview-style questions with confidence.

For spoken English and oracy, sessions might involve practising monologues, improvisation, or presentations with structured feedback on clarity, projection, and confidence — skills that also strengthen written work.

For Functional Skills, text analysis, and creative writing, we'll work through past papers and sample texts together, focusing on comprehension, inference, structuring written answers clearly, and building confidence under timed conditions.

Every lesson finishes with clear, honest feedback — what's working, what needs tightening, and exactly what to focus on next — so progress is visible from one session to the next.

Message me and tell me what you're working on — I'll get back to you quickly and let you know how I can help.
