About Sierra
I have always been a lover of math, but did not realize how much I loved teaching it until my 3rd year of college. I went to New York University and majored in Childhood & Special Education, so I student taught at the upper elementary level. When working with 4th grade students, I noticed a large discrepancy in the math skills levels. I then proposed to my mentor teacher that I could lead an advanced mathematics lesson while she taught the general population of students that stood at the below average level. Being challenged to create math lessons at a much higher level inspired me to teach older students. Now, I currently teach at the middle school level and tutor math after school. Using the method described, my students leave our sessions more confident in their abilities and look forward to telling me the improvements in their math quiz/test scores!

Using a model of gradual release of responsibility, I begin by giving students the tools and studying materials necessary to practice independently. I encourage questions often, and answer with the implication that the student understands mathematics technically, but perhaps not situationally. Students will not only be able to memorize formulas and strategies effectively, but they will take away valuable sense-making skills and deep understanding of how all math connects and intertwines.
