About Lauren

Being a full-time freelance artist & art teacher is a dream come true & I look forward to working with new students across the globe! I have many years of artistic experience, beginning with receiving a BFA in illustration, painting & graphics from Mason Gross School of the Arts (Rutgers) in 1988. Since then I've continued to expand my visual art & teaching career. I currently exhibit around the country & enjoy creating from my personal experiences. I've been commissioned to create paintings, illustrations, graphics, marketing/promo materials, and photography for clients from across the US & abroad. The medium I use depends on the project; I work with photography, oils, acrylics, watercolors, pen & ink, & computer graphics (Photoshop). Using this experience enables me to be a better teacher and work with students with a wide range of skills and interests in different subject matter. I teach people of all ages, typically beginners & intermediates, & am always encouraging & supportive of their skill levels. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I look forward to working with you!

I've always aspired to being an artist! After receiving my BFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts (Rutgers) in 1988, I have gone on to becoming a full time visual artist with 30+ years of experience in drawing, painting, illustration and other media. I take the time to personalize my art lessons to meet the creativity, skill level and artistic needs of each student so they can get the most out of the lessons. I've taught students ages 8-80! My work has been exhibited in galleries and other venues for over 30 years and I've sold to private collectors, businesses and do a lot of freelance illustration work, so I have the passion and skills to help others grow their creativity.
Depending on the student's skill level, we first start with the foundation techniques they need then progress to creating their own works of art focusing on subject matter that interests them. I will also critique the work to help hone their strengths & work on any weaknesses in a supportive & encouraging way. I have experience with pencil, pen & ink, acrylics, watercolors. oils, mixed media, photography & graphic design.

  • When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

I’ve been an artist ever since I was a young kid but I started giving private art lessons about 18 years ago when a friend asked if I would give Art Lessons to her young daughter. It went so well that I continued to take on referrals for new students, eventually applying for art teacher jobs through online platforms, and now I’ve been giving private art lessons, full-time, for 10 years.
  • Which artists or works affect you the most?

I have very eclectic taste in art. Everything from Matisse to Edward Gorey. I find inspiration not only in painting but mixed media, illustration and design work as well as all are valid forms of art.
  • What are the qualities and skills required to succeed in this area?

To be a successful artist you need to continue to practice and explore new materials and subject matter until you find what resonates with you. If you want to continue with Art as a career path, persistence, organization, networking and knowing how to market yourself are crucial. And it’s always good to visit museums and galleries to see up-and-coming artists as well as studying the masters.
  • What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

Keep looking for inspiration in different ways! Whether it’s taking a walk in nature, visiting a museum or Gallery, trying a new material or subject matter… And don’t be discouraged during unproductive times and use that as an opportunity to network and research art forms that you’re interested in to get inspiration to boost your creativity.
  • How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

My passion has always been art whether it’s been creating it or studying it. I’ve known ever since I was in seventh grade that I wanted to be an artist full-time. Teaching was the next step after exhibiting and doing art festivals for many years, which I still do but just now focus more on the teaching aspect. It feels great to see my students succeed and create successful works of art!
  • What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

Of course winning awards and prizes for my artwork is amazing but recently I received a grant to be able to provide free art lessons to kids on the spectrum whose families can’t afford Art Lessons, and that has been the most rewarding thing of my career! Artwork helps them express themselves and gain confidence and creativity and it’s amazing to see what they produce!
  • Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

Absolutely! Especially some of the autistic kids, as I mentioned above. Many are very young and yet their creativity and drawing skills far exceed their years and I’m always amazed at the unique ideas that they come up with. I also love hearing when my adult students that are trying to make Art their career tell me that they got a commission or sold work at an exhibit.
  • Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

I’m very organized and I make sure to respond to my students as fast as possible. Even when critiquing I show encouragement and use positive reinforcement and never make them feel badly if something doesn’t turn out right. To me, as long as they’re producing art it’s a positive thing! Many of my students have gone on to become good friends of mine and continue lessons with me and continue to create, exhibit and sell their own work. Some have even become collectors of my work. But mainly I love to encourage their progress and make art not only educational but very enjoyable!
