My Approach to Teaching Coding and Development
My core philosophy is that learning to code should be an empowering and creative process, not an intimidating one. I believe in learning by doing, moving from foundational concepts to practical application as quickly as possible to keep you engaged and motivated.
My Teaching Techniques and Methods
My methodology is centred around three key principles:
Project-Based Learning: We don't just learn theory. From day one, we build things. Every new concept, whether it's a variable or a complex function, is immediately applied to a mini-project, like building a small part of a website, a simple game, or a data analysis script.
Scaffolding Knowledge: I introduce concepts in a logical, step-by-step manner. We start with the "why" behind a concept, use real-world analogies to make it stick, and then dive into the code. This ensures you have a solid foundation before we build on it with more advanced topics.
Guided Problem-Solving: I won't just give you the answers. My goal is to teach you how to think like a developer. When you get stuck, I will guide you through the debugging process, asking questions that lead you to discover the solution yourself.
The Usual Structure of a Class
A typical one-hour class is structured for maximum impact:
Recap & Q&A (5-10 mins): We briefly review the previous lesson's key takeaways and address any questions you had while practicing.
Concept Introduction (15-20 mins): I introduce the new topic for the day, using clear explanations, visual aids, and relatable examples.
Live Coding & Practice (25-30 mins): This is the core of the lesson. We'll work together on a specific problem or project. I will code along with you, explaining each line and encouraging you to experiment.
Wrap-up & Next Steps (5 mins): We summarize what we accomplished and I'll provide a small, optional challenge or assignment to solidify your understanding before our next session.
