About Jools
I've been teaching adults English as a Second Language for over 20 years, working mainly at the university level teaching international undergraduate and postgraduate students and I have a degree in English and Drama and a Master's in International Relations and Asian Politics. I also have a Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and am an Empowering Learning Practitioner. I now work in schools as a Teaching Assistant and English instructor, helping children with special needs and those with ASD. I have been tutoring for many years and now work mainly with children and adults with dyslexia or those who find learning difficult.

Inspring children and adults to fulfil their potential through focusing on their strengths is one of my main aims. The children and adults I help generally come to me as they are stressed about learning because something has created a barrier to their learning, along with specific learning needs such as dyslexia and/or ADHD. With special learning needs such as dyslexia also comes incredible creativity and a different way of looking at the world so it is these things that I focus on in the sessions. It is very much about empowering my students to be themselves and to recognise how amazing they are just as they are.
My first aim is to find out about the student, their interests, what they find difficult and easy and what makes them stressed. Then I introduce them to helpful tools and strategies that they can use to destress, which can then set them up for being more open to learning.
The structure of the lesson will depend on what the student needs. My sessions are always relaxed, fun and productive and intuitively I have a feeling for when a child can do more and when they have had enough. I also talk to parents/carers to find out anything else that may be helpful before the session and after each session, I feedback to parents and also teach them the tools. The children I support have said that their reading and spelling have improved as a result of our sessions and they now are more relaxed about learning.
