About Shawn
Hi, I’m Shawn, a native Mandarin tutor based in Canberra. I hold a degree in Education from Southern Cross University and double degrees in Information Technology and Finance from the Australian National University. Over the past year, I’ve focused on one-to-one Mandarin tutoring, helping students develop practical Chinese skills for real-life situations. Two of my students now travel confidently in China and communicate comfortably with locals, ordering food and handling everyday conversations with ease. My lessons are fully personalised to each learner’s goals. Chinese is my native language, and my lessons centre on interactive learning and cultural immersion. I bring real-life scenarios into the classroom—ordering food, asking for directions, small talk, messages, and short essays—so you learn expressions you can actually use. Through role-plays and guided practice, you will move from “understanding” to “confidently using” Chinese. As a professional web-novel author, I’ve refined my reading and writing skills; I also practise calligraphy and ink painting and have travelled widely across China, so idioms, stories, and aesthetics make your learning memorable and enjoyable.
I build a personalised study plan around your habits and goals, and I teach grammar systematically from beginner foundations to advanced academic Chinese. If you’re preparing for HSK, I provide level-specific vocabulary, structured drills, and realistic mock tests to build both accuracy and speed. My correction style is patient and precise—tones, pronunciation, handwriting, and punctuation are polished so your Chinese sounds natural and looks professional.
Each lesson starts with your questions. I encourage you to bring the problems you encountered this week, and we'll solve those first, so confusion never piles up. From there, I expand the topic with new structures and vocabulary, always connecting language to culture so meaning and usage are clear. I follow a practical Teaching and Learning Cycle: short diagnostic → clear modelling → joint practice → independent practice → immediate feedback with an updated plan.
Homework is short and effective—usually 10–15 minutes a day: a quick dialogue recording, a paragraph of writing, or one high-value pattern drill, plus spaced-repetition word lists and “real-world missions.” Between lessons, I offer free after-class consultation for your Chinese questions (quick clarifications or feedback via messages), so you always know what to practise, how to improve, and why it matters. My goal is for us to be teacher and student—and also friends who learn from each other—so you feel supported, motivated, and proud of your progress.
