About Jac
PhD student in Human Geography and Economics at the University of Liverpool, using social statistics to model the causes of low fertility in Taiwan. I've been in academia or tutoring for my whole post-school life, studying and tutoring a range of different subjects. I'm looking to take on a couple of students while I finish my PhD and transition to post-doctoral research.
I'm a sociable person and get on well with young people. I've chosen to focus on tutoring A-level maths for now because it's what I enjoy tutoring the most. The qualification has a coherence and simplicity that makes it a joy to teach.
My teaching style is focused on exam success. In practical terms, this means sitting as many past papers as possible, as early as possible. In terms of teaching particular topics, I always try to emphasise the simplicity of the foundational rules: the entire A-level maths syllabus is arguably reducible to a single A4 page of equations. I've found that much of the mental fog that descends on students when attempting tricky problems can be dispersed by re-focusing on this core set of rules. After that, it's just practice, practice, practice, and paying close attention to how the student tackles problems when difficulties arise.
