About Briar
I have spent four years teaching programming to more than 130 students, and I bring fresh energy and contemporary relevance to every lesson. My background includes a degree in computer science and professional experience in user experience design and front-end development, which shapes my emphasis on creating technology that is accessible and intuitive. I began tutoring after volunteering at coding workshops for beginners and discovering how rewarding it is to help someone write their first successful program. I have worked with students of all ages, including children exploring coding for the first time, adults changing careers, and seniors seeking digital literacy. I am particularly skilled at helping students overcome the intimidation that often surrounds technology by creating a supportive environment where questions are welcomed and progress is celebrated. I design my own beginner-friendly curricula and maintain a collection of interactive tutorials and exercises. Outside of teaching, I develop educational apps, participate in hackathons focused on social good, and advocate for technology accessibility. I believe that programming is a skill that empowers people to create rather than just consume technology, and I am passionate about making that empowerment available to everyone.

My programming teaching is fresh, accessible, and designed for students who are new to coding or who have previously struggled with technical subjects. I begin with the absolute fundamentals of computational thinking, teaching students to break problems into steps, recognise patterns, and design solutions before introducing any programming syntax. I use visual programming tools and block-based environments to build confidence before transitioning to text-based languages like Python and JavaScript. Every lesson includes immediate hands-on practice with concepts reinforced through short exercises and quick feedback loops. I teach students to read code before writing it, developing the ability to trace execution and predict outcomes. Debugging is introduced early as a normal and valuable part of the programming process. I use game-like projects, interactive stories, and simple utility applications to make learning engaging and personally relevant. For students preparing for computer science courses, I teach the core concepts of algorithms, data structures, and computational complexity in accessible ways. I also emphasise digital literacy, including internet safety, data privacy, and the ethical implications of technology. My sessions are patient, supportive, and highly encouraging.
