About Jenna

I am a French tutor with 6 years of experience and a Bachelor of Arts in French Contemporary Studies alongside a year spent living in Paris during which I worked at a contemporary culture organization. I have taught over 210 students and my specialization in contemporary French culture means my teaching materials are genuinely current — I am constantly updating my resource library from current French media. I am active on French social media and maintain friendships with French people across a range of ages and professions, which keeps my awareness of contemporary French language use personal, direct, and current.

My French teaching is anchored in the contemporary language as it is actually used by French speakers today rather than in the formal register of textbooks or the historical register of classical literature. I use social media — French Instagram accounts, TikTok in French, French YouTube channels — as teaching materials because they provide authentic, current, engaging language at every register level and expose students to the cultural preoccupations of contemporary French youth. Contemporary slang — verlan, argot, digital native vocabulary, borrowings from Arabic and African languages — is addressed as serious vocabulary essential for cultural literacy in France today. French podcasts are used extensively as listening materials and I have developed a curated library covering current affairs, culture, comedy, and personal narrative that provides authentic listening material at different difficulty levels. French current affairs are used as conversation and reading material because they are what French speakers actually discuss and because students who can engage with current events in French can participate in the cultural life of the French-speaking world. Digital communication in French — the conventions of French text messages, social media posts, and informal email — is addressed as a distinct register because most students never learn it formally and yet it is the register they will use most frequently in real interactions with French friends and colleagues. French humor — the specific ironic, satirical, absurdist flavors characteristic of French comedy culture — is introduced through clips from French comedians, satirical programs, and comedy films. My teaching goal is a student who sounds like they actually live in France rather than studying it.
