About Christopher

I knew since grade school that I wanted to be an actor when I grew up. What made me want to be an actor so badly was bringing joy to people and making people laugh by performing in plays and musicals and telling stories. I’ve always wanted to help people, lift people up around me, and put smiles on people’s faces. That is why I am also passionate about tutoring people and teaching people about the French language, culture, and heritage that I love. I’ve grown up visiting France, learning the language and the history, eating the food and it is truly a second home of mine. I want to build partnerships with students of all ages and experience levels by helping them achieve their goals. I love sharing my knowledge of the culture, the language, and the people that have made me who I am today. Working on your French with me will mean two professionals working together: two people who are passionate about learning, expanding their horizons, and working towards feeling confident enough to travel to France someday and be able to speak as much French as they want, read classic French literature, speak to a French person they might run into on the street or in a business meeting, or even just enjoy understanding a little bit more of French movies and TV shows! I look forward to meeting you and getting to work! À bientôt! (See you soon!)

When I teach, I strive to help my students understand concepts fully so they are confident enough to explain the concept to another student and teach the concept if they had to. I work to explain the reasoning/history behind the structure of the French language rather than simply stating the rules and leaving it up to the student to memorize them. The main reason I love teaching French is because it is so easy to relate what we’re learning to real-world situations! I love coming up with example sentences and scenarios that help the student understand how to use what they’re learning in real life. When meeting a new student, we’ll spend time discussing their confidence level, their goals/reasons for learning French, what they hope to accomplish working with me as their tutor, and how they feel they learn best, whether that is visually or aurally, whether they want lots of follow-up materials/assignments sent between sessions, or whether they want to work and monitor progress from session to session. Most importantly, I want all my students to feel comfortable with completely open and honest communication with me. Since they are already taking the HUGE first step to reach out and ask for help, I want them to feel like they can request, adjust, and/or dictate the kind of help they need. Once we are clear on what will serve them best, I will know how to best offer the help they’re looking for. Here is how I would typically run a 1-hour session for a student who is actively studying French in school or in some form of classes - 5 min or less: GREETING - “How are you?”, “How’s your week been?” - 5-10 min: WHAT ARE WE WORKING ON TODAY - “How did your assignments go last week?”, “How did that test go?”, “What assignments/exams do you have coming up?”, “Let’s see how I can help!” - 20 min: WORK - Discover where the student needs help; Clarify questions; Deepen understanding; Give practice problems/sentences; *If student is feeling comfortable, assign homework for next session* - Less than 5 min: CHECK-IN - Evaluate student’s comfort w/ concept: keep working on this topic?, more review problems/sentences?, move on to different topic? - 20 min: WORK 2 - Keep reviewing concept, OR, Move on to different concept(s); *Assign homework for next session* - Last 5 min: CONCLUSION, REVIEW, ALIGN - Quick review of concepts discussed; Review assignments/goals/homework for next session; Confirm MY homework for the week (send additional learning materials, research other helpful sites/tools, schedule mid-week check-in, etc.); Confirm meeting time for next week; Goodbye and GREAT WORK! If we get to a point where the student no longer has concepts they want to work on in the session, I will typically dive into a culture lesson for the rest of the session. Topics we might cover include: - French culture/geography/history/literature - Organization of France into regions and departments - Other French territories around the world - Other Francophone countries around the world - Overview of history of French monarchs (evolution, coronations at Reims, downfall, France under Napoleon, France TODAY) Besides working on French grammar, speaking, reading, and writing, I want to educate my students on France’s rich history and heritage and how that has influenced the French people of today. While my experience teaching French has consisted mostly of tutoring college students, I can certainly work with students of all ages and levels.
