About Athena
Hi! I’m Athena, and I’m really excited to help students feel more confident in French!
I graduated from high school in British Columbia with honors through the French Immersion program and earned my Dogwood Diploma. I’m now continuing my education with the goal of working in education, so teaching and helping students learn is something I genuinely love.
French is also a big part of my life outside of school. My dad was born in Lyon, France, and much of my family still lives there. I’ve been lucky enough to visit France for longer stays throughout my life, which has given me a connection to the language and culture beyond the classroom.
I’m a young tutor and a student myself, which I actually see as one of my biggest strengths! I understand what it feels like to learn something new, get stuck, or need someone to explain it in a different way. I want my lessons to be relaxed, encouraging, and genuinely enjoyable while still helping students make real progress.
I work with students in grades 3–11, from beginners to French Immersion students looking for extra support. I’d love to help make French feel a little less intimidating and a lot more fun! :D

My approach to tutoring is personal, patient, and based on meeting each student where they are. I am still developing my teaching techniques as I continue my own education, but I believe that is also one of my strengths. As a student myself, I understand how difficult it can be to feel behind, confused, or simply uninterested in a subject. I want my lessons to feel like a place where students can ask questions, make mistakes, and build confidence without feeling judged.
I begin by listening to the student. We talk about what they are currently learning, what they find difficult, and what they feel they need the most help with. I then use a combination of conversation, questions, and simple assessments to get a better idea of their French level. For students who are completely new to French, I start with the basics and find a comfortable starting point rather than assuming they should already know something.
From there, lessons generally begin with practical French conversation and vocabulary before gradually moving into sentence structure and grammar. I like to build grammar from things students are already able to understand and use, rather than overwhelming them with rules right away. Reading is also an important part of my teaching. I encourage students to read between lessons, with the reading material chosen specifically around their age, French level, interests, and things they enjoy outside of school. This could include stories, articles, short texts, or other age-appropriate material.
A typical lesson may include a short conversation in French, reviewing vocabulary or concepts from the previous lesson, introducing a new idea, practicing it together, and finishing with something the student can work on independently before our next lesson. However, I don't want every lesson to look exactly the same. I adapt my lessons depending on what the student needs that day.
I am a French Immersion graduate and completed my Dogwood Diploma with honors in British Columbia. I am also beginning my path toward a career in education, with plans to study Early Childhood Education at the University of Calgary. I have a strong personal connection to French as well. My family is from France, my father was born in Lyon, and I have family who still live there. I have visited France for extended stays throughout my life, which has given me experience with French beyond just the classroom.
What I think sets me apart is that I am young and still a student myself. While I may not have decades of tutoring experience, I can relate closely to the students I teach and remember what it feels like to learn these concepts for the first time. I want to make French feel approachable, interesting, and useful rather than something students simply have to memorize for school.
My lessons are primarily intended for students in Grades 3–11, approximately ages 9–16. I am happy to work with students who are just beginning French, students in French Immersion who need additional support, or students who understand spoken French but need help developing their vocabulary, sentence structure, grammar, reading, and written French. :)
