About Jillian
I am a French tutor with 10 years of experience and a Master of Arts in French alongside a professional qualification as a language coach from a specialist coaching institute. I have taught over 420 students and I have trained in the specific methodology of language coaching — which is distinct from language teaching in its use of goal-setting, mindset work, and motivational strategies alongside linguistic instruction. This coaching dimension of my practice means I address the psychological obstacles to language learning — confidence, fear of mistakes, perfectionism — as directly as I address the linguistic ones. I also lead a monthly French conversation group that has become a vibrant and self-sustaining community of learners at different levels.

My French teaching is organised around fluency as an immediately reachable state rather than a distant goal, and I have designed a programme specifically to move students from formal knowledge of French to spontaneous speaking ability in the shortest possible time. I begin by identifying and dismantling the specific beliefs about language learning that prevent progress — the belief that more grammar study is needed before speaking, that mistakes are failures rather than progress markers, that pronunciation must be perfect before communication attempts are made — because these beliefs cause the paralysis that most students experience. My sessions are primarily and insistently conversational from the very first lesson, with my technical instruction embedded in the flow of conversation rather than interrupting it. I use the concept of fluency triggers — topics, contexts, and relationships that allow students to speak more freely than their formal language level would suggest — and I deliberately cultivate these triggers as a path to generalised fluency. Error tolerance in my teaching is high — I allow students to communicate imperfectly in ways that move the conversation forward rather than stopping for correction, because fluency is built by maintaining communicative flow and refining it gradually. I teach students specific fluency strategies — circumlocution, approximation, paraphrase — that allow them to maintain conversation when they lack a specific word. Regular recording of conversation sessions gives students an objective record of their progress. My teaching goal is a student who walks into France and talks their way through whatever happens.
