Find out more about Dr Fouzia

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have come across many university students who find writing essays and dissertations very challenging. This has inspired me to provide to students to allow them to achieve their desired goals and reach their aspired career.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I have tutored Bachelor's, Master's and PhD students for over 14 years, across a range of UK universities (for example, Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, Imperial, Warwick) and international universities (for example, Harvard, MIT). Thus, I have extensive experience in working with UK and overseas students, including students from China, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and America. My work covers the following areas: university pre-sessional courses, sociology, psychology, business, criminology, nursing, health and social care (both at college and university level), childcare, teaching, paramedical science, midwifery and beyond.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I have been inspired to teach by the skills portrayed by my PhD supervisors who provided invaluable support at each stage.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I believe that tutoring is a unique skill which requires patience, and commitment to give the learner confidence in completing the assessment to a high standard. I assess students to establish the strengths and areas of improvements, in order to best support them.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

In my university days, I broke down each assessment into mini, achievable targets, which made my life very easy. I implement such strategies with my learners so they can also enjoy studying rather than see it as a burden.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Often students reach out for help very close to the deadline and are under extreme stress. I urge students to start planning and writing as soon as they receive the assessment brief and organise their time effectively.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I am particularly passionate about supporting students with learning difficulties to encourage them that no piece of work is impossible, providing that a correct support plan is in place. I also enjoy supervising research projects, at all levels and subjects, where I can pass knowledge and skills to others and guide students to shape their writing to ensure it meets the assessment criteria.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I am highly skilled in supporting students across different types of assessments. I ensure students produce assessments at a high standard and that each element of the assessment brief is met. I explain to students that writing is a process, thus if this is grasped well, they are likely to score high marks in their exams/ essays/ dissertations.
