About Roy
Hello, my name is Roy, and I have been teaching English for over forty years.
In that time, I have taught more than 1,000 students, from primary pupils finding their feet to university students writing dissertations. I am a graduate of Kenyatta University in Kenya and hold a Master's degree from Nexford University. I am also the author of books in the literature space, so I bring both a teacher's and a writer's eye to every text we read.
I teach both the American and British systems. Whether a student is preparing for the IGCSE, A-Levels, KCSE, SAT, ACT or AP English, I tailor each lesson to their curriculum, their goals and their pace.
My approach is simple: patient, structured and encouraging. I believe every student can become a confident reader, a clear writer and an articulate speaker, and I have spent my career proving it.
I look forward to helping you or your child do the same.

My teaching method and techniques
I teach English as a skill you build and a language you enjoy. Every lesson combines three things:
Reading closely. We read short passages, poems and extracts slowly, asking what the writer chose to say and why.
Writing often. Students write in every lesson, and I mark and discuss their work with them. A clear paragraph is built one sentence at a time.
Speaking up. I ask students to explain their ideas out loud, because someone who can say an argument can write it.
Grammar is taught through the student's own sentences, not from a list of rules to memorize.
A typical lesson
Warm-up (10 min): A quick vocabulary or grammar challenge based on the previous lesson.
Core focus (25 min): The day's topic, such as an essay structure, a set-book chapter, a comprehension technique or an exam question type.
Practice (20 min): The student writes or answers while I guide them.
Feedback and next steps (5 min): We note what improved, what still needs work, and what to practice before the next session.
I adjust the plan to each student.
What sets me apart
Four decades of classroom experience means I can tell why a student is struggling and how to fix it.
I have written books on literature, so I teach set texts as a reader and a writer, not just as exam material.
I am at home in both the American and British systems, so students can move between them.
I work to build confidence as well as marks.
Who the lessons are for
British system: KCSE, IGCSE and A-Level English, including language and literature.
American system: SAT and ACT reading and writing, AP English, and college-level essay writing.
Students of all ages: primary pupils who need a stronger foundation, teenagers preparing for exams, university students working on essays and dissertations, and adults who want to speak or write more fluently.
Specific needs: set-book analysis, creative writing, comprehension, grammar repair, and spoken English and presentation skills.
