About Mari
Describe the inside of an egg, your first writing assignment.
I show one image. The images consist of three items, a physical chair, a large photo of the chair, and a dictionary definition of the chair. Which one is real?
Imagine you are the first student chosen to desegregate a public school. Give a speech to the board of education, teachers, and staff of that school concerning the reasons for desegregation and why it should be you. How will you deliver your message?
These are examples of some of my assignments. I hope my classes will inspire you, push you, awaken your creativity, change your perspective, and offer you respect and support.
My experience as an international performing artist, presenting my original works at festivals in over 30 countries, affords me the ability to support and listen to disparate voices. This performance background of over 30 years is one of my most vital talents. Researching and delving into pedagogy, practices, and processes establish a daily work routine to serve students in their endeavors.
My motto is to ask many questions and always be kind.

My students are my gifts in life. I desire to know what you know, why you want to learn, and how you learn. Will you risk being out of your comfort zone, engaging in creative and conceptual thinking? My lesson plans include artist practices, imaginative thinking, writing, and performing exercises that challenge your daily perceptions.
Here are some examples that are the core of my teaching:
*Creative Writing ( producing prose and poetry through unusual prompts and exercises )
*Ritual and Performance ( survey of rituals, creating your own rituals, and performing your original rituals )
*Public Speaking and Oral Interpretation of Literature ( research, writing and presentations )
*Performance Art ( surveys contemporary art principles and invites you to create a "performance" based on these practices.
*Acting Through Improvisation
*Storytelling ( a process of sharing stories from Fairy Tales to your own personal stories. What do you share and how? )
My lessons can be purposeful for insights, revelations, thinking outside of the box, practicing mindfulness, and understanding your processes in living. These lessons are for undergraduates in college, adult learners, high school students, gifted or AP learners, and especially those students that might be interested in a challenging adult ed class. The scope of the classes is not the requirements but electives for those interested in addressing their own creativity, confidence with public presentations, and discovering processes to engage with meaning in daily life.
