About Tony

I started playing Chess aged 11 and won the Guildford Chess Club Championship 3 times in my teens. I was a leading UK Chess Junior and achieved a notable draw against former World Chess Champion Karpov in a clock simultaneous he gave to 10 leading UK juniors. These days I concentrate on coaching and my main playing is blitz/rapid internet where my Chess.com and Li.Chess ratings exceed 2300 ELO. My last Classical Chess tournament was Hastings Masters December 2025 where I achieved a 50% score.

I decided to take up Chess Coaching because I wanted to pass on some of my learnings and love for the game to novices and intermediate Chess players. I have always enjoyed tutoring and coaching.

Having taken early retirement from working for a major Global Food Company following a major restructuring, I have set myself up in business as a Chess Coach. I am a registered ECF Coach and have enhanced DBS Certification.

I have a patient, friendly and structured approach to coaching.

About the lesson

I am a friendly and patient tutor who tailors my approach to suit the level and needs of the student. Both of my parents were in the teaching profession and I have previously provided private tuition in Mathematics and Accounts.

I have over 50 years' experience playing Chess and as a leading UK junior was joint under 14 Southern Counties Champion and achieved draws in simultaneous exhibitions given by ex-World Champions Karpov and Petrosian.

I have extensive experience coaching Chess to individuals and groups with varying age groups ranging from children to adults.

The length of coaching lesson suits the client

I am an ECF registered Chess Coach with Enhanced DBS Certification.
