About James
Hello, I’m James. I have dedicated the last 18 years to helping children develop confidence, achieve academic success and enjoy learning. Throughout my career, I have held a range of senior positions, including Head of English, Head of History, Deputy Head Academic and Deputy Head, alongside serving as a school inspector and school governor. I hold a PGCE and a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Management.
My experience has given me a deep understanding of how children learn, how outstanding teaching enables pupils to flourish, and the high standards expected by leading independent and grammar schools. Whether your child is preparing for the 11+, an independent school entrance assessment or simply needs support to build confidence and close gaps in their learning, I provide personalised tuition tailored to their individual needs.
Every lesson is carefully planned, engaging and evidence-informed, combining clear explanations, structured practice and regular assessment to ensure pupils make measurable progress. My teaching is underpinned by the same high expectations and proven classroom practice that I have developed throughout my career as a teacher and senior leader.
Above all, I believe that children achieve their best when they feel supported, challenged and encouraged to think independently. My aim is not only to improve academic outcomes but also to develop confident, resilient learners who enjoy success both inside and outside the classroom.

Every lesson is carefully planned around your child’s individual strengths, areas for development and learning style. Following an initial assessment, I create a personalised programme designed to build confidence, close knowledge gaps and develop the skills needed for long-term success.
Lessons are engaging, structured and challenging. I combine explicit teaching, guided practice, worked examples and regular assessment to ensure pupils make measurable progress while developing confidence and independence.
With over 18 years’ experience as a teacher, former Deputy Head Academic, Head of English and current Head of History, I bring the same high expectations and evidence-informed teaching used in outstanding classrooms. I have also worked as a school inspector and governor, giving me a broad understanding of what schools expect and how children thrive.
Lessons are available online or in person for pupils from Year 3 through to Year 6 and typically last 60 minutes. I specialise in 11+ preparation, English, maths, independent school entrance and helping pupils reach their full academic potential.
