About Tamika
I was always a student that helped classmates who had difficulty with assignments. It wasn't until first semester on campus, being a chemistry major majority of the science department was stressed out and in constant confusion. Biology and algebra came as second nature to me. I think this is because I was able to retain the knowledge from grade level school so well, and I was approached by other tutors to join tutoring circles where we all helped each other in lacking areas as well as assisted failing and students on the edge of giving up. This is when I came to the realization that I could be a good tutor, and that's what I became. Even after leaving campus I made myself available to students in grade level school and dropouts trying to get their GED. The oldest person I helped with reading, writing and basic math was in the 70's age range. The youngest child would be around day-care ages, learning everything from colors, numbers, shapes, alphabet, seasons, months, days, etc. Patience is key, and with focus we can learn anything that we put our minds to.

All students learn at their own pace and in different ways. Broadly speaking I will work with each student to gain knowledge in what they specifically need help in, pertaining to writing, science and math from elementary to high school levels. My approach to assisting a student in increasing their level of knowledge in science and math will vary from student to student. Once I am informed of the specific subject and subdivision of that subject the student is working on I will go forward with the best methods that I feel may work, and will continue to work with that student to determine what is specifically needed for them to gain their level of understanding in the subject matter and become confident that they know the information at hand. Generally speaking I will communicate with the student to find the point of confusion, when and where in the lesson did their level of understanding decrease. Then, I will overview the information with the student that they didn't retain, for math and science are progressive subjects, meaning to fully know the information for chapter 2 a student must know the information from chapter 1, and so on from there. Once the student retains that data I will assist them in tying in the new information. This way the student will actually understand the knowledge instead of memorizing info just enough to pass the next test or complete the next assignment. Science projects and lab reports are more complex since the student must produce accurate data by properly performing an experiment and conducting thorough research prior to completing the assignment. I'm available to assist in each step from the hypothesis to the final presentation. Writing starts off difficult for a lot of students. Essays are one of the easiest writing assignments because there are simple methods to writing a good essay, such as a skeleton breakdown. Once a student bullet points the introduction, key points, and conclusion to their stance on the topic they can use that as a blueprint to all essays. Most times the instructor gives the students topics, simplifying the assignment even more. Whichever type of writing assignment, from grammar and punctuation, learning synonyms and antonyms, to a 10-page research paper or manufacturing a monologue the go-to is to show the student the basics in the simplest way. Some students have a hard time reducing the complexity, and that's what tutors are here for. Every student should be treated with patience and welcoming arms, and I vow to do just that. No question is a wrong question, and learning is not a race. It's not as hard as it seems to a frustrated student with the right guidance before them. The hard work and dedication will pay out in the end once the student is confident in the information. At that moment, the student and the tutor are both winners!
