About James
I have a PhD in criminal law and I have lectured criminal law at Wits from 2000-2014 - leaving as an Associate Professor. I did my pupillage and went into practice as an advocate in 2015. I did mostly criminal defence work. I have also acted as a Judge in the criminal courts in 2019 and 2020.

My lessons are based on the assumption that a student has no prior knowledge of criminal law - or that what he or she knows may be mistaken. For these purposes I begin each lesson with the fundamentals and build up what a student needs to understand for each topic.
I like to ground my lessons on what students feel intuitively the law should be. Often students intuitions, as to what the law ought to be, reflect what the law actually is. Where student intuitions are aligned with the law, I provide the legislative or common law basis for these intuitions. Where student's intuitions, as to what the law ought to be, do not reflect what the law is, I lead students through a critical appraisal of what the law is. In this way I am able to teach students both what the law is and what it ought to be. Students are then able to formulate a critical understanding of what the law is.
