About Josh
Hello, I'm Josh! I am a First class graduate in History and Politics, currently studying a Master's in Medieval History at a Russell Group university. I have a love for both teaching and learning - this is why I returned to university! During my time at university I would regularly score at the top of my cohort in coursework and examinations, and was awarded a scholarship to study an MA. My passions lie specifically with Medieval History, however I am well versed in a vast span of History, Politics, Current Affairs, and to a lesser extent in Philosophy, English Language, and Norse literature. I am a firm believer in the importance of a broad, wide-ranging education. In my previous historical work I have drawn on multifarious reference points, ranging from literature, to art, psychology, and politics. Similarly, I emphasise the importance of physical fitness, and am passionate about hiking and other extra-curricular pursuits. I believe that these elements help round a person, which is vital not only for academic success, but success in the wider world.

My lessons are firstly centred around the student's needs: What specifically has the student been asked to do? Is it to write an essay? Or answer exam questions? Knowing this, I work to not only deconstruct the subject in a way that is accessible to the student, but to also equip the student with the ability to decipher academic challenges themselves. This is often the gateway to the highest marks, both at school and university levels. As such, my lessons usually begin with determining what the student has been asked to do, or what they would like to cover. We can then deconstruct this, and then go over the broad-strokes of the subject at hand (i.e. a historical time period), and then go into the detail of a specific question (i.e. a specific coursework question). Following this, so to not get bogged down in the detail, we will then link it all back to the broader subject, and then back to what the student has been asked to do, before re-capping. These sessions are typically an hour. Having extensively worked with children and teenagers before, I approach tutoring with a friendly and un-patronising demeanour, endeavouring to meet the student at their own level, and try to help them engage with a subject to truly excel.
