About Charlie

I am an independent researcher, musician, and academic mentor based in London. I recently graduated with a First-class degree in Linguistics from the University of Cambridge, and have experience contributing to research projects with Professors in Linguistics and Musicology. I helped to run a dissertation research methods workshop for younger undergraduate students while studying at Cambridge.

I have previously worked as a linguistic analyst (for an AI firm) and an internal auditor. Both roles required me to work with commercially sensitive information with a high degree of care and accuracy. I have also served on the advisory board of the UK Government's All-Party Parliamentary Group on AI. I know how to write clearly and convincingly under pressure.

My sessions are suited to any undergraduate student in the humanities. Producing an outstanding piece of academic writing is multi-faceted, and consistently producing outstanding work requires a thick web of good habits - an "ecology of practice". During my degree, I wrote 2 extended essays per week across 12 papers, achieving a 1st with Distinction in 6 papers, and a 1st in 5 others. Three of my exam essays received the highest awardable mark. Reliable habits minimise room for error, and I hope some of my know-how can help you build up your own ecology of practice.

Our sessions are guided by your needs and ambitions. Whether your focus is constructing arguments, planning essays, collecting and evaluating evidence, academic writing, meeting deadlines, all of the above, or anything else, I am here to help. Each step along the way, I have designed a set of resources to help guide your work. I am available as a sounding-board for any ideas you have, and will proofread any work that you send me in advance of the session.

My approach to academic mentoring is informed by extensive reading in: linguistics; communication theory; philosophy of language; philosophy of mind; philosophy of science; semiotics; the history of ideas; systems theory. I am a member of the International Association of Semiotics Studies.

Sessions can run for 1 to 2 hours - up to you. I prefer to hold them in person, but can accommodate online sessions. You may want to have regular sessions throughout the academic year, or a targeted helping hand for an important deadline or exam. Either way, let's have a chat and see if we'd be a good fit!
