About Carla
My name is Carla I’m a friendly and patient primary school tutor with a passion for helping children grow in confidence with their reading, writing, and speaking skills. I believe every child learns in their own way, so I tailor lessons to make them engaging, encouraging, and suited to their needs. I want to tutor because I love seeing that ‘lightbulb moment’ when something clicks, and I enjoy supporting children to reach their full potential while making learning fun.

Sure! Here’s a picture of what a primary school level English tutoring lesson might look like, step-by-step. ⸻ 1. Warm-Up (5–10 minutes) • Purpose: Get the student engaged, relaxed, and ready to learn. • Examples: • A quick spelling or vocabulary game. • Reading a short poem or riddle together. • Discussing a picture and describing it in detail. ⸻ 2. Review of Previous Lesson (5 minutes) • Go over homework or activities from the last session. • Recap key points (e.g., “Last week we learned about adjectives. Can you remind me what they do?”). ⸻ 3. Main Learning Focus (20–25 minutes) • Tailored to the student’s needs — could be: • Reading comprehension – working through a short passage, asking questions to check understanding. • Writing skills – practising sentence structure, punctuation, and creative writing. • Grammar – introducing or reinforcing a topic like verbs, conjunctions, or tenses. • Spelling & phonics – breaking down tricky words into syllables and sounds. Teaching style: • Interactive (questions, prompts, and activities instead of pure lecturing). • Use of visuals, flashcards, or props to keep it engaging. • Linking topics to the child’s interests (e.g., using dinosaurs for a child who loves them). 4. Practical Activity (10–15 minutes) • Hands-on task to practise the skill learned. • Examples: • Writing a short story using new vocabulary. • Role-playing a conversation to practise dialogue punctuation. • Sorting words into categories (nouns, verbs, adjectives). • Reading aloud and discussing meaning. 5. Wrap-Up & Recap (5 minutes) • Summarise what was learned in the session. • Ask the student to explain it back (“What’s one new thing you learned today?”). • Give positive feedback and encouragement. 6. Homework / At-Home Practice • Set a short, focused task — not too long, so it’s manageable and builds confidence. • Example: • “Write 5 sentences using at least 3 new adjectives.” • “Read this short story and underline all the verbs.” ⸻ A typical lesson would be 45–60 minutes, with a good mix of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The key is to keep it fun, interactive, and confidence-building, so the child doesn’t feel like it’s “extra school” but rather an enjoyable learning boost. ⸻ If you’d like, I can also write you an example 1-hour lesson plan for a primary school English tutoring session so it’s ready to use. That way you can see exactly how the time would be broken down.

Carla was excellent with tutoring my daughter through her 11+. She was patient and really easy going with her tutoring even going as far as altering the structure of her lessons to suit my daughter’s learning style. I’ll definitely be using her again when my youngest sits her 11+
