About James
I am a Leeds Conservatoire graduate with over 10 years of professional experience composing music for short films, orchestras, and library music used in television. I also have prior teaching experience in schools, including teaching brass instruments and music theory, which has helped shape my patient and supportive approach. My lessons are suitable for all ages, particularly beginners and early-stage composers or producers, or anyone looking to unlock their creativity and gain confidence with music technology. My approach to tutoring is friendly, practical, and focused on building creativity and confidence. Lessons are tailored to each student, with an emphasis on learning by doing. I teach music composition for film and TV, music production, theory, and DAW basics, mainly using Cubase Pro and Logic Pro, with support in Sibelius and Pro Tools. Lessons can include developing musical ideas, writing to picture, basic harmony and structure, workflow, and turning ideas into finished tracks. I can also cover keyboard basics for composers and producers. Lessons are typically 60 minutes and are relaxed but structured, with clear aims each session. My teaching style is flexible rather making lessons especially accessible for beginners.
