About Borna

World Chess Federation Master, former British Youth Chess Championx3, multiple gold and silver medalist in Youth Asian and European championships, published author on Chess & Psychology, member of the English National team in the 2021 online Olympiad. I’m rated ECF 2470 and peaked at 2407 live FIDE. My online rating hovers around 2850-3000 nowadays and has placed me amongst the top 250 players worldwide on chesscom on many occasions before.

Whilst in my early 20s and daily grind to reach my personal goal at chess(the Grand Master title) I’m proud to see my students grow love and passion for chess of all ages and levels, as well as constantly improving their skills. Most of my students are amongst the top 97% players on chesscom, but started far from it. Some of them have even begun their own successful teaching career on this platform, passing on the accumulated knowledge.

As a competitive player at the highest levels in the country, my playing and mentoring methods are always on par with the latest developments in the world of chess. This is particularly valuable as chess has been evolving for quite some time and being up to date/setting new trends is crucial, yet quite rare as a coach. I myself follow a structured programme and I can help you develop yours to achieve your goals.

If I’m not spending countless hours playing chess and mentoring, you will probably find me either running or at the gym trying to hit a new PR!

I’m delighted to work with all levels. We'd normally start by going through some of your recent games; This allows me to familiarise with your chess and help you improve on your game from an expert eye right from the beginning. Once I have a good understanding of your skills, we will customize a training regime for you that is realistic, effective and most importantly, enjoyable.

Mastering the middle game, sharpening your tactical vision and a perfectly tailored opening to your style are some of my main areas of focus for practical chess. This can vary depending on pupil’s experience, but either way, you will feel a much deeper connection with chess in a short time.

My main aim is to help you thoroughly appreciate the concepts and apply them to your daily games. This approach will help you play “simple chess, good chess!” so that good moves come across a lot more naturally.

I’ve won global chess tournaments since I was little, and have been sharing my love and knowledge for chess by coaching students of all ages and levels for the past 5 years from all over the world. My pupils are always welcome to reach me outside of lessons for any questions, or just simply brag about their wins!;)

I strongly believe creating an entertaining environment would make a huge impact on one's learning, and insist on delivering an excellent experience session after session.

  • When did you start practicing? How did this passion find you?

I started playing club chess tournaments at the very young age of 3, actually winning some games against players of all ages! I played my first World Youth Chess Championship at the age of 4, competing with 8 year olds all around the world! Starting at such a young age gave me a head start to become a consistent junior champion of my former country (Iran) and win numerous continental medals in multiple age categories. Throughout this journey, I always had a passionate and resourceful coach, which played a significant role in my successes.
  • Which artists or works affect you the most?

I look up to quite a few chess legends but the one who I admire most is the great Bobby Fischer. From the modern era, I certainly follow the super-talent and my compatriot, GM Alireza Firouzja and pick new ideas from his games.
  • What are the qualities and skill required to succeed in this area?

Passion, determination, consistency and looking forward to new challenges.
  • What is the most valuable advice you can give to help someone stay focused on creative projects?

Set yourself realistic goals and improve step by step to reach the target. It's important to constantly reach your set goals and create new ones, specially in the limitless world of chess!
  • How would you describe your passion; how does it make you feel?

To me, Chess has always been inseparable. It's literally impossible to not think about chess everyday and I spend hours daily wether practicing or teaching my pupils. Chess unlocks unlimited doors in one's view and it has certainly helped me be a much better version of myself!
  • What creative achievements are you particularly proud of?

I'm particularly proud of the drastic but consistent improvement all my pupils have. Watching them grow love and passion for chess while improving makes me very proud as their coach. I have also recently published a very resourceful chess book with one of the best book publishers out there, which I'm extremely proud of!
  • Have you ever been surprised by a student; by their ability or quick progression?

Absolutely! Most of my students improve their rating by 200-300 points in literally just a few sessions. While some pick up faster than others, it's very important to personalise teaching each individual and ensure this huge improvement doesn't slow down.
  • Being a Superprof is an art! What is your secret?

I love sharing my vast knowledge, years of professional experience and passion of chess. I believe as a chess coach, patience, flexibility and communication with your student is also very important.
