About Agil

Hello, I am Agil Pirverdiyev, a FIDE Master with a rating of 2508 rapid and 2411 classical. As a junior I won the Under 14 European Championship and the Under 16 World Championship, and I have a team silver medal from the Chess Olympiad. I hold FIDE coach and arbiter titles, and I have won open tournaments in Italy, Switzerland, France and Spain. I have been teaching for 15 years and have worked with more than 50 students, all online.

Parents often come to me because they want their child to think more carefully rather than faster. Chess is unusually good at that. It rewards planning several moves ahead, checking your own reasoning before committing, and accepting that a bad decision has consequences you have to live with. Those habits transfer, and they are hard to teach directly in any subject.

My teaching is built on one method rather than a pile of material. In any position where the plan is not obvious, I ask four questions. What is my worst piece? What does the pawn structure tell me? What does my opponent want? Which exchange can I force? A child who learns to run those four questions has a procedure to fall back on instead of guessing, and that is exactly the habit that helps elsewhere.

I work with complete beginners, with children preparing for their first rated tournaments, and with adults who have been stuck at the same rating for years. You are welcome to read reviews from my students here, and on chess.com and lichess.org.

Lessons are one to one and online, and every one is built around the student's own games rather than a fixed syllabus.

A typical lesson has three parts. First we look at a game the student played recently and find the moment the position actually changed. Second we work on the idea behind that moment: a pawn structure, an endgame technique, a calculation habit. Third the student gets a small amount of work to do before the next lesson, so the idea is used and not just heard.

I teach beginners through tournament players, from children who have just learned the moves to adults who want to stop making the same mistake. With younger students I keep the sessions concrete and ask a lot of questions instead of lecturing, because a child who explains the reason for a move remembers it.

Before we start I usually ask for two or three of the student's games, or their online profile. That tells me more than any questionnaire, and it means the first lesson is already about them.
