About Pesandu
I’m Pesandu Liyanage, a FIDE Master and professional chess coach from Sri Lanka. I have over 12 years of competitive chess experience and several years of coaching experience. I have worked with players of different ages and levels, from beginners to advanced tournament players.

My coaching approach is personalized, practical, and focused on measurable improvement. I first identify the student’s strengths, weaknesses, playing style, and goals, then create a training plan based on their individual needs.
A typical lesson can include analyzing the student’s games, calculation and tactical exercises, positional understanding, opening preparation, endgame technique, and practical decision-making. I encourage students to think independently and explain their ideas rather than simply memorizing moves or following engine recommendations.
For tournament players, I also provide opponent preparation, opening preparation, game analysis, and practical strategies for different types of positions and opponents.
What sets me apart is my experience as both a competitive player and coach. I focus on practical chess that students can apply directly in their games while developing deeper calculation, positional understanding, and decision-making skills.
My lessons are suitable for beginners, intermediate and advanced players, junior tournament players, and ambitious players looking to improve their online or FIDE rating.
Whether your goal is to learn chess, improve your rating, prepare for tournaments, or become a stronger competitive player, I will tailor the training to your specific goals.
