About Louie
I am a FIDE Arena International Master with over 26years of coaching experience and nearly four decades of competitive chess involvement. I work with students of all levels, helping them improve strategic understanding, focus, and confidence — both on and off the board. My coaching emphasizes problem-solving, creative thinking, and developing a strong mental game. I have extensive experience mentoring students who face challenges such as shyness, anxiety, or social discomfort, using chess as a structured and supportive tool for growth. Whether your goal is steady improvement at a local chess club or preparing for major tournaments such as the World Open, I provide clear guidance, structure, and encouragement tailored to each student’s needs.

Chess is a demanding and highly competitive game that requires strong concentration, emotional control, and creative thinking — truly a “game within a game.” My lessons focus on increasing focus, pattern recognition, and problem-solving skills while helping students become comfortable with core chess ideas and practical decision-making. I also mentor students outside of lessons by encouraging participation in local chess clubs and tournaments when appropriate, helping them gain real-world experience in a supportive way. Chess can be both a competitive pursuit and a personal journey, and I aim to create a calm, focused learning environment where students feel confident to grow at their own pace.

Louie is a very knowledgeable and patient chess instructor. I have known Louie professionally and competitively for over 30 years. He ran a successful after school chess program for LAUSD elementary aged students. Parents and students of all skill levels really enjoyed his program. He currently teaches and coaches several private students, many of whom are winning tournaments and raising their chess ratings. I feel that Lou is very trustworthy.
CS BowensI have been Louie’s student before and can say that he is a very excellent and knowledgeable teacher of chess . Louie’s character and personality are what make him the right choice for a master chess teacher . Michael Redden 562-309-1071.
