About Sarah
I am here to boost a student's confidence with any given set of school/class expectations. As a former high school English and community college teacher, I have extensive experience with multiple reading and writing levels, and I have had excellent success with those students needing my focused assistance on their writing and reading assignments. My philosophy is that if the student "shows up," I "show up" to create together an individual path of progress that is ultimately what the student wants. Each tutoring session is an opportunity to strengthen a student’s mindset of success by making reachable goals while establishing the pace that is best suited for that student. Education is a collaboration between instructors that must involve the student and empower their process of learning. I am happy to help in this way, no matter what demands the tutee faces in reading and writing.

Every student at every level of schooling has a unique set of learning needs that are a valid starting point to gain and strengthen skills, regardless of achievement gaps, grade level specific demands, or "you should know this already" thinking. My job in tutoring high school and college students is to work with each person in locating their area of ability in the current situation, and from there moving forward to improve that ability. There are no judgments about what might be missing in a student’s previous or current educational experience. That being said, a foundation of understanding and trust should be established from the start of the tutoring partnership between tutor and tutee. By beginning the session with composing some reachable goals pertaining to the student’s immediate assignments, especially time-sensitive tasks like an expository essay, or a specific reading analysis, we plan for the lesson ahead together, and at the end of the session, review and see what progress has been made, while making adjustments to our initial plans. Should the student want to build skills in areas like studying, grammar, note-taking, and/or organization, I can easily provide specific materials from my extensive collection of curriculum and lessons to meet their need for practice and review. My tutoring session set-up and environment are comfortable and supportive therefore, because I can meet a student at any level of academics, especially when the pressure of the classroom environment causes the student anxiety that often results in a lack of confidence. I am here to help change that outcome, with lasting results.
