About Toni
For the last year and a half, I have been a science teacher at The Totteridge Academy. As a result, I have acquired a wealth of knowledge that enabled me to understand how to teach a range of students with different educational needs. Using clear concise instructions and diagrams, assessing learning through engaging activities and challenging students with difficult yet scaffolded questions has proved effective. Having taught every year group from Year 7 to year 11, with a range of abilities, my subject knowledge in KS3 and GCSE level science is vast. My knowledge of the required scientific content has developed into specific understanding of the nuisances of the syllabus that achieve success. As a result, I have been able to do the following for my students:
- Help students understand the most complex scientific concepts in the curriculum
- Model how to approach challenging questions using stepped processes
- Provide exam-techniques and strategies to attain top marks
- Provide revision tools, skills and questions to support learning outside of
classroom settings
- Inspire and enthuse students, which has enabled them to have more confidence in their ability
As a result, I have seen 50% of my students improve by 2 grades from previous end of year assessments at KS3 and a 70% pass rate of my recent GCSE students, most of which were predicted 2s or 3s. Using these same methods, I am now able to apply these skills to a range of qualifications in Psychology and History by shadowing experienced teachers in these fields and thorough self-teaching of these curriculum over the 15 weeks.
Having loved working with young people for a long time, my experience has ranged from large to small groups, as well as one-to-one mentoring. The interpersonal skills required to inspire young people is what I deem as the icing on the cake. I believe learning in any field requires a belief of one's own capability. Being able to communicate effectively, hold young people accountable and encourage them beyond their self-doubts are the skills that have allowed me to support people. Using these skills has enabled to be part of their success in a range of ways; from mentoring, to education to singing and so on. The reward of seeing students achieve their personal goals is what continually pushes me to work hard.
