About Maisie

My lessons focus on laboratory techniques with a relaxed, application-focused approach. I use real lab and industry examples to make analytical chemistry practical and meaningful. Together, we explore instrumental analysis, including spectroscopy techniques such as NMR, IR, and UV-Vis. Chromatography methods are covered in detail, showing how compounds can be separated and identified efficiently. Quantitative analysis is a key part of our sessions. You’ll learn to calculate concentrations, interpret results, and understand sources of error. Lessons highlight how these techniques are applied in real labs and industrial processes, making chemistry relevant to practical work. Students gain confidence handling sophisticated laboratory methods while linking theory to hands-on applications. Complex concepts are simplified without losing depth, and common mistakes are addressed to develop strong lab habits. Each session focuses on problem-solving and analytical thinking. Through guided exercises, case studies, and examples, students build practical skills and understanding step by step. By the end, they can apply techniques confidently and accurately. These lessons bring the lab to life, making every experiment meaningful and easy to grasp.

I am a Chemistry tutor with over 7 years of experience and a BSc in Environmental Chemistry. I specialise in making organometallic chemistry and catalysis accessible and engaging for university students. My lessons focus on understanding metal-carbon bonds and the principles behind catalytic cycles. We explore key reactions such as the Heck reaction, Suzuki coupling, and other cross-coupling processes in detail. I highlight their practical applications in synthesis, drawing on examples from pharmaceuticals, materials science, and industrial chemistry. By connecting theory to real-world uses, students gain a deeper understanding of reaction mechanisms. I have extensive experience teaching chemistry majors and chemical engineering students, tailoring lessons to their level and academic goals. Complex mechanisms are broken down into clear, manageable steps while retaining scientific rigour. I emphasise both conceptual understanding and problem-solving skills. Through examples, practice problems, and discussions, students develop confidence in mastering catalytic principles. Together, we uncover the chemistry that drives efficient and selective transformations. The goal is not just to learn reactions, but to truly understand how they shape modern synthesis. Step by step, we’ll master the chemistry that enables efficient, selective, and impactful chemical reactions.
