About Adelaide
Hello! I am a piano teacher with over 4 years of teaching experience and more than 200 students taught. My musical background includes formal training in classical piano performance alongside significant experience in jazz and popular music styles, and I draw on all of this in my teaching — giving students a broad and musically rich experience rather than a narrow one. I teach students of all ages from early childhood through to adulthood, and at all levels from complete beginner through to advanced performer. I prepare students for ABRSM and Trinity grade examinations with great thoroughness, covering all components of the examination including scales, sight reading, and aural, and I also teach students who have no formal examination goals and who are learning piano simply because they love music. What I am most proud of in my teaching is the number of students who have come to me feeling that they will never really be able to play the piano — often because a previous teacher has implied as much — and who have gone on to perform pieces they would never have believed they were capable of. That transformation, from self-doubt to genuine musical achievement, is the outcome I work toward in every student relationship, and I have seen it happen repeatedly across four years of teaching.

I approach piano teaching from the perspective that the instrument is a means to musical expression, not an end in itself. Technique matters — it matters enormously — but only because it is what allows musical ideas to be realized. I keep this perspective at the center of my teaching at every level, which means that even when we are working on a purely technical exercise, I am always connecting it to the musical context that makes it relevant. My lessons are structured around the specific needs of each individual student. A complete beginner needs a careful and logical introduction to reading music, basic hand position, and the geography of the keyboard. An intermediate student typically needs more targeted technical work alongside more ambitious repertoire choices and deeper engagement with musical interpretation. An advanced student needs the kind of detailed, sophisticated discussion of musical and interpretive choices that pushes their understanding beyond what any written score can convey. I am experienced teaching students preparing for ABRSM, Trinity, and other grade examinations, and I know these syllabi well enough to prepare students not just to pass their grade but to perform at their genuine best on the day. I am also highly experienced teaching students who are not working toward any examination and who simply want to play beautifully for their own enjoyment and satisfaction — for whom the approach is different, more exploratory, and in many ways more purely musical.
