I believe in adaptive, student-centred teaching that builds confidence and clarity. My methodology involves first breaking down complex concepts into manageable parts, then guiding students through practical, real-world applications. Each session involves explanation, demonstration, guided practice, and independent problem-solving with feedback. I also encourage questions and discussions to deepen understanding.

Lessons are typically 60 to 90 minutes long, depending on the student's needs and goals. I provide targeted support for each learner, whether they’re struggling with fundamentals or advancing into specialised areas like Artificial Intelligence or Cybersecurity.

With over 15 years of experience as a university lecturer in Information Technology, I’ve taught hundreds of students in Software Development, Programming, AI, and Cybersecurity—ranging from first-year undergraduates to final-year honours students. I hold a PhD in Computer Science and am currently completing the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment to support VET-level teaching.

My lessons are ideal for:

University and TAFE students needing help with IT courses

Senior high school students preparing for advanced IT subjects

Adult learners or professionals upskilling in coding, AI, or software development

Find out more about Deon

  • Can you tell us about your first experience using a computer?

My first experience with a computer was during my early schooling years, where I was fascinated by the simplicity of DOS-based programs and early graphical interfaces. That curiosity quickly turned into a passion as I began exploring programming and digital systems more deeply. It laid the foundation for a career dedicated to teaching, research, and software development.
  • What is the technological evolution that has marked you most and what will be, in your eyes, a turning point in this field?

The most impactful evolution for me has been the rise of artificial intelligence and cloud computing. My own PhD research explored adaptive communication models for symbiotic agent systems, integrating AI and cloud resources for scalable, intelligent behaviour in software agents. Looking ahead, I believe the convergence of AI, edge computing, and immersive environments (like augmented and virtual reality) will be a significant turning point, especially as expectations rise in sectors such as gaming, security, and education.
  • Explain your expertise, your interest in it and, more broadly, its importance in the computer world.

My expertise lies in artificial intelligence, programming, and curriculum development. I’ve taught foundational programming and advanced AI to thousands of students over 15 years and designed educational programs that bridge technical depth with real-world application. My research on symbiotic agents seeks to model intelligent behaviours inspired by biological cooperation, with potential applications in gaming, cybersecurity, and decision-making systems. This work contributes to developing adaptable systems that can collaborate, evolve, and respond intelligently to changing environments—an increasingly vital need in the digital world.
  • Do so-called 'visionaries', such as Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg inspire you or do you have other role models?

While I respect Gates, Jobs, and Zuckerberg for their vision and influence, my inspiration often comes from educators, innovators, and everyday professionals who shape others through teaching and mentorship. I admire those who quietly lead through knowledge-sharing and community-building, which aligns with my passion for teaching and guiding students at every level of their academic journey.
  • What would you say to an uncomfortable person in front of a screen who says that "IT is too complicated"?

I’d say: “That’s completely okay—and a normal place to start. IT is not about knowing everything at once, but about learning step by step.” I’ve spent much of my career helping first-year students—often with no prior experience—develop confidence and skill in computing. With the right teaching approach, patience, and practical examples, anyone can become comfortable with IT.
  • What are your other passions, related or non-related to computers?

Beyond computing, I enjoy mentoring, public speaking, and event planning. I’ve organised large university showcases and coordinated professional development workshops, which combine my interests in communication, collaboration, and logistics. I’m also passionate about emerging technologies like 3D printing—particularly its potential to transform manufacturing, education, and prototyping. I find it exciting to explore how these technologies intersect with software development and open new opportunities for innovation.
