About Moises
Hi, I'm Moises, a junior at the University of Virginia pursuing bachelor's degrees in mathematics and computer science, with plans to continue on to a PhD in mathematics.
Teaching has been part of my life for five years. I work as a primary instructor and manager at a math and reading center, where I have taught more than 500 students between the ages of 3 and 16 and trained over 15 new instructors. I also founded a free community coding camp in partnership with a public library, which introduced more than 200 students to programming.
My own education has given me a strong foundation in the subjects I teach. I graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, then earned two associate degrees, in mathematics and in computer science, with a 4.0 GPA. I have also led teams in math and data science competitions and built software used by roughly 1,000 students.
What matters most to me is that students feel capable. I explain the reasoning behind each idea, work at a pace that suits the student, and make sure no question feels like a bad question. I am patient, reliable, and organized, and I keep parents informed about progress.

Hi, I'm Moises!
I'm a junior at the University of Virginia studying mathematics and computer science. For five years I've taught and managed at a math and reading center, working with over 500 students from age 3 to 16 and training more than 15 new instructors. I also hold two associate degrees (mathematics and computer science) with a 4.0 GPA, and I'm a native Spanish speaker.
My teaching method
I start by finding out where a student is actually stuck, because the problem is usually a gap from earlier, not the topic on the homework. From there I teach the idea behind the method, not just the steps, so students can handle problems they haven't seen before. I mix short explanations with a lot of guided practice, and I correct unproductive habits (rushing, skipping steps, guessing) early, before they harden. Students get a clear picture of what they're improving and why.
A typical lesson
Check-in (5 min): how the week went, upcoming tests, anything confusing.
Review (10 min): go over recent homework or quiz mistakes to find patterns.
Core teaching (25-30 min): work through the main concept with examples, then have the student try problems while I guide.
Practice (10-15 min): the student solves problems on their own, and I step in only when needed.
Wrap-up (5 min): recap what we learned and set a short practice goal for the next session.
Parents get brief updates on what we covered and what to practice.
What sets me apart
Real experience at scale. Five years of teaching hundreds of students, and I've trained other instructors, so I know what good teaching looks like.
I'm both a math and a CS person. Few tutors can teach calculus and Python equally well.
Close in age. I'm still a student, so I remember how these classes feel, and students find me easy to talk to.
Bilingual. I can work with students and parents in English or Spanish.
