About Marija
Marija Bubanj, Violin/Viola A native of Belgrade, Serbia, Marija Bubanj began studying violin at the age of six. At the age of sixteen, in addition to violin, Marija Bubanj started playing the viola. She received a Bachelor of Music in Viola Performance from the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad in 1993. During these studies, she played in a chamber ensemble Artisti Dell Arco, Belgrade, where she performed on numerous European stages as well as Radio and TV broadcasts. The ensemble performed pieces of Bach, Mozart, Vivaldi, Corelli, Torelli and Respighi. She also performed with the Symphony Orchestra of the Music Academy of Novi Sad where she played a standard orchestra repertoire of classical and contemporary composers. After receiving a scholarship to Roosevelt University, Ms. Bubanj earned her Master of Music in Viola Performance from RU Chicago College of Performing Arts in 1997. Her principal teachers include Richard Ferrin, viola (Chicago Symphony Orchestra), Uros Pesic and Mihajlo Mihajlovic. Marija is a Chicago-based freelance violinist and violist with various chamber ensembles and orchestras performing classical, jazz, pop and electric music. She is on faculty at Sherwood the Community Music School at Columbia College Chicago as a violin and viola teacher and a Chamber Music Coach. Ms. Bubanj is also the artistic director of the string teaching program MB Muzik.

The most rewarding feeling is when I see my student improve to an advanced violin playing skills. I like to see when the student is excited and motivated with their violin playing and progress - when there is a happiness on their faces. I am very detail oriented and specific. I am also very creative and I always want my students to get the best possible education. I create an approach that is unique to every student.

I have always been passionate about teaching, I feel it's something I was actually born with. Since I was very little I knew I wanted to be a teacher. And violin became my passion.

If it's a new student, I work a lot a correct posture, which means violin and bow hold. Also, to make sure there is no tension in the body and that the hands are coordinated. Then I approach teaching beginning pieces, techniques, and songs.
All Ages and ability levels, from 3-99.
It's important to find a good match. Sometimes the violin teacher can be great, but maybe not the best chemistry with that particular student.
Performances are usually the most fun. One of most recent was that a special person showed up at my chamber music recital. They surprised me at the end when they came to me to congratulate. I was very happy and excited about them secretly admiring my performance!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
My recommendation would be to clear right from the start about the student's needs, goal, wished and to discuss with the teacher how realistic would those goals would be. Basically, how much time the student has, what would be a level of commitment, practice, focus, financial obligations and so on.
