About Courtney

My name is Courtney and I have had a passion and love for swimming since I was little. I learned to swim when I was 2 years old because my mom was a swim instructor. I did competitive synchronized swimming for 8 years and competitive swim team for 5 years. I have been teaching children and adults of all ages and all levels to swim for 7 years now and have coached synchronized swimming for 3 years. The passion and love that I have for the water and swimming drives and motivates me to teach others.

I enjoy the work that I do as a swim teacher and swim coach because I get to teach people a life skill that could one day save their life. I love working with people and feel like everyone should learn how to swim.

I have beei have many years of experience swimming competitively for racing and synchronized swimming and I have been teaching for 7 years now. I have been Red Cross Certified as a Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor for three years and have had my Hydrotone Water Aerobics and Physical Therapy license for three years

My typical process for working with a new student starts with an evaluation. I ask my students how much they know about swimming, are they afraid of the water, and what scares them about the water if they are afraid. I then ask my students what they want to get out of this class: do they want to learn how to tread water, be more comfortable in the water, refine their strokes, etc. I ask this because I want to make sure that I make the class around them and their wants and needs.

I have worked with children as young as 2 years old to grown adults over the age of 70 years old to everything in between. I have taught students with special needs, blind people, people who were deaf, people who were paralyzed and people with different health conditions. I have worked with people who have never swam before, people with traumatic stories of why they are afraid of the water, people who are athletes that want drills to refine their strokes, and everything in between. I have taught a wide variety of people of all ages and backgrounds and have enjoyed every minute of it.

The advice I would give a student looking to find a swim teacher is to make sure they are qualified and have years of experience in teaching. Many times people hire people who know how to swim well but don't know how to teacj or explain the technique. Do not hire someone who has never taught before or has only been teaching for a year because they don't know what they are doing or how to adjust to different teaching methods for different students.
