About Sydney

I personally tutor all students with the objective of advancing their skills and preparation (in every course and subject including homework help to all standardized testing). This way, students arw able to get professional assistance from a university professor of more than a decade and a seasoned personal tutor with experience spanning over 15 years. Such experience allows me to cater tutoring to the individual student through variant learning styles and the best teaching style for each personality. I am federally certified to teach, have taught all ages/levels from kindergarten phonics to adult education and university courses. Standardized testing instruction is a speciality including PSAT, SAT/ACT, GED, GRE, MCAT, PRAXIS, COMPASS placement tests, and all A.P. course testing. For A.P. tests, including all subjects together, my students have earned a 4.1 average. With SAT/ACT tutoring, my students have averaged a 190 point increase.

In high school I began tutoring other students who needed assistance passing classes or fully grasping concepts.  This included students younger and older than myself, and I eventually began reaching out to other high schools to formally offer tutoring services through an internship program.  Through this opportunity I learned a lot about myself and my desire to help others.  Teaching became the natural development.  My love writing, Literature, and rhetorical analytics (I had helped operate four political campaigns where debates demanded assessing rhetorical stances and writing speeches but I had little desire to go into politics as a profession).  This lead to logically becoming a university professor to help assure the success of others in their desired field, awareness of the power of the spoken/written word, and spreading the awareness that through knowledge and dedication a student could accomplish anything.  Tutoring remained a passion as one-on-one assistance or small group assistance allowed for specificity in aiding the learner.  Ultimately, I had to decide between this passion and archaeological field work.  My heart lay in the telling of the stories and understnding rather than digs and the potential of discovery.

I have multiple Masters and Masters+ degrees and training in Composition, Rhetoric, Literature, and Linguistics.  I teach this daily at the University level but have also taught multiple subjects at the Secondary level and with Dual Enrollment students.  Also, for fifteen years, I have offered private tutoring to all ages from kindergarten phonics and articulation to adult education in GED course work, university course work, study skills, and life skills.

Within the first ten minutes of conversation about learning and classes (why a student feels bored, irritated, or just pain confused), I am able to determine generally how the student needs the information presented for retention and active learning.  With that information I am able to cater my teaching methods and content to the individual.  Age and level of the student are factored in, and a 15 minute quiz/test to discover student level is often administered.  This quality is never sacrificed; online and in person students are treated equally and with same level of respect and expectation.

All ages K-adult learning in all fields.  I have even functioned as a police tutor to assist officers with the written exams to advance in their careers.

Look to ensure the tutor works well with many styles of students, has a comprehensive means of determining where the tutoring needs to begin, and can actively teach based on your learning style.

The most (semi) recent event that I find very exciting and assists in my courses is the actual discovery of ancient Troy.  My students, upon seeing the discovery, realize the ancient literature of The Illiad and The Odessy are simply a stylized telling of a very real ancient happening that had previously been believed to simply be mythology.

A more recent happening is Bob Dylan's winning The Nobel Prize for Literature.  I have taught his lyrics and style as poetry since the start of my career to the questioning of many of my colleagues.  His winning solidified my using his writing for my entire career.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The most important question to ask oneself when looking into a tutor is why you require this assistance.  An answer of "I'm not doing well" is valid but not introspective enough.  Are you bored in the class?  Are you easily distracted during?  Could it have to do with the time of day?  Or is the teacher's teaching style not effective with me?

All of these questions, though I ask them at the start of working with a new student, help the student become more self aware and active in their education.

My pricing system is on a sliding scale based on the student or family's income level or ability to pay.  Typically this ranges from $12/hour to $20/hour.  In comparison to other tutoring agencies, this is rather low (with typical hourly placement falling roughly around $40-$50/hour).  I also offer group rates for families or tutees with multiple students in need of help.
