About William

I am a freshly graduated high school student, so the courses I am offering to tutor are fresh in my mind. On top of that, I've kept a great majority of my paperwork and notes so that I can use them as references. I also understand the stress that AP classes can impress upon a student, and so I will do my best to prepare students to handle that stress.

I am a National Merit Finalist, have achieved 5's in AP Chemistry, AP BC Calc, and have passed Organic Chemistry I and II with high A's. I have also taken Calculus III and Introduction to Differential Equations, both with A's.

Tutoring is gratifying. It's rewarding to help another learn a new concept and to see that spark of realization as they learn something new. As well, tutoring allows me to spend more time on a specific concept that I could only have briefly covered during a regular class year.

At first it was just group study sessions that slowly transitioned into one-on-one sessions. This profile is the first that I have tried to extend my services to people I'm not at least familiar with.

As a high schooler, I tended to be the one leading the study groups and reviewing people on subjects they don't remember before our finals. I also have spent hours individually teaching peers when they were especially concerned about a subject. Overall, however, I am a student who is looking to help other students.

I usually ask what they want to focus on, whether it be a specific concept or if they want to have me go over a range of subjects. In the former case, I ask more for what the issues are with understanding or if they want more practice. In the case of the latter, that's usually more suited for a review before a large test or exam. If the student has no particular agenda in mind, I will ask them about what they will learn in their classes in the future and prepare them for that.

Typically, I work with high schoolers of every year, but I have had the opportunity to work with college age students. All students have had a specific goal in mind or, at least, a specific issue that I could assist with.

I would ask that they be sure that they need a tutor. If they lack the time to spend trying to understand a concept, then they should look for a tutor. However, if it is a case of confusion only from an initial glance, then I ask that they spend a little more time making sure they truly do not understand the subject.

Quarantine has been annoying for the fact that exercise and meetings with my friends have been restricted, but I have also enjoyed it. It has afforded me the time to focus on practicing piano and, most importantly, introspection.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
If it is a specific homework problem, they should first have an attempt at it so that their teacher can find the specific step that they went wrong in their thinking. They should also ask themselves if there is a specific part of a technique or mechanism they do not understand because a teacher can always reteach an entire subject, but that will take time and may gloss over what is not understood.

It depends on the subject. With mathematics, I would prefer at least 25$/hour, but with chemistry, especially as it gets more advance, 30$/hour is the minimum simply because conceptualization and understanding is far more important in chemistry for success. Those prices, of course, break down into the expected segments.
