About Nancy
I specialize in working with students who consider themselves to be beginners, "non-singers" or who have some anxiety around singing and would like to discover, or rediscover, the joy of singing.
I LOVE my job — I love the exploration and discovery that happens with beginning singers. For a summary of what I tend to do with students you can skip down past the next few paragraphs. :-)
People who don't have tons of aptitude for singing at a young age are often discouraged — they're given the idea that singing is an "either you have it or you don't" kind of thing, which is NOT true.
Singing can be taught and learned — but our culture tends to be very unkind about singing that is anything less than excellent, and to write people off. But how do you learn to get better at something when people don't offer to teach you how? It's crazy — and I can't think of anything else we do that with! Nobody expects you to know how to ski, or cook or play piano without being taught how!
On top of that, singing is such a vulnerable activity that discouragement is often deeply demoralizing. And yet, singing is so meaningful that most people STILL wish they could sing!
So, I create a very non-judgmental atmosphere for beginning singers. It's extremely important to feel free enough to play and explore all the things our voices can do (sometimes by just playing with sounds and not worry about "getting it right"). Fear can be paralyzing and with singing, since our instrument is our body, this can really stop us in our tracks. We have to be able to get comfortable with making "mistakes" and singing "wrong notes". I talk about replacing "cringe" with "curiosity" so that people feel safe enough to stay engaged and really start exploring and learning. And we have fun. Why would you want to do it if it's not fun?!
Through a combination of vocal games, exercises and singing lots of great songs (of course), we work on the following skills:
• Breath in a way that supports your singing
• Explore your vocal range (higher, lower and middle notes)
• Learn to relax your throat (which feels better!)
• Find YOUR natural, relaxed, open sound
• Learn to match pitch (sing what you're hearing)
• Learn to sing more in tune
• Start singing with more feeling and expression
• Basic music theory to help you make sense of songs
I work in an intuitive way, starting with whatever are YOUR strengths and challenges, and together we find the path that's right for you.
I am truly honored to do this work — I am grateful everyday to get to such meaningful work with wonderful people!

First we chat. I like to learn about your "singing story" — what your previous experiences with singing have been like — and I like to hear about your singing goals, even if they're only to be more happy singing in the shower!
Then we loosen up with some breathing, movement and sound making (singing is a whole body activity!) I'd call that "improvising" except that most people find that word terrifying! We just make stuff up — you can't get it wrong! This way you get comfortable and together we start to discover some of your stregnths and challenges. We're getting to know each other through sound!
It's a pretty intuitive process and since I start where YOU are, I'm never exactly sure what skills we'll focus on in what order. But we usually get to breathing and simple pitch-matching pretty quickly because these are very basic skills. And it's often fun and productive to start singing simple, familiar songs early on.
