About David
Voice/singing development based upon functional principles of vocal mechanics.
I am David Way, a voice and singing teacher in Sherman Oaks, California in the southern San Fernando Vally area of Los Angeles, California.
It would be my pleasure to speak with you about your singing goals and how I might help you achieve them.
In addition to my own continuing private study spanning over 40 years with three master voice teachers, I have over 20 years of private "classroom/academic" voice science instruction in my teaching preparation with Dr. Joel Ewing, DMA PhD in Los Angeles, California.
A lesson is typically one half hour in my home studio in Sherman Oaks or over skype/facetime if distance is a factor.
In the initial lesson I have the student perform a variety of vocal excersizes as I asses the condition of the voice and its various components and qualities. Together we come up with the plan to build and refine the voice with focus on your goals!
In addition to my private preparation and 20+ years of private study of voice science I hold a BA in Drama, with honors in Musical Theatre Performance from UCIrvine and advanced degrees in Education from Pepperdine University.

I love combining the analysis and "prescription" in figuring out how to build various voices and impart knowledge of vocal mechanics with students.
After beginning lessons with Dr. Ewing I was invited to join his academic seminar in voice science. This sparked a passion for the combined "scientific analysis" of a voice and the creative application of science to the voice in addressing a particular issue within the context of longer term development and the student’s overall goals.

Initially we ask a new student to perform a variety of exercises to assess the "condition" of the voice, it's basic coordination and secondary factors (resonance, vowel formation, pitch matching and regulation, etc.). We take all this and factoring in the students goals come up with the "plan" for each individual student.

All STYLES/GENRES (Rock, Musical Theatre, Opera/Classical, Jazz, Country, R&B, Soul, Gospel, Mariachi, Folk, Alternative…!)!
All LEVELS from beginner to accomplished, working professional singers and performers!
Vocal Rehabilitation and Reconditioning
Make sure that whichever teacher is selected has the ability to address YOUR voice holistically, and not apply cookie cutter "techniques" to every voice they encounter.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
As a student I would like to know the teacher’s direct preparation to teach voice. Just because someone may “sing well and ‘pretty’” does not necessarily mean they have the knowledge and skills to develop the voice in others…
What is the teacher’s academic background/preparation in voice science and ability to listen to a voice “functionally” - to know how that particular voice is coordinating. Do they have the skills and experience to apply appropriate exercises for that voice at that time to attend to any particular issue and in the context of longer term vocal development for that individual voice.

David is extremely knowledgeable about what he’s doing. He not only works to help your voice sound the best it can, he also develops your grasp of the mechanics of your vocal cords, so you know WHY you sound good and are therefore able to use your instrument to the best of its ability. He also has a great sense of humor!! You won’t be disappointed!
In 1984 I was in a bad car wreck. The resulting coma left me with a severely monotone voice for years. I worked with speech
-therapists and later professional singers. I had nearly given up! I discovered David Way just before the pandemic, his education and experience were evident I was impressed with the way he evaluated my abilities and deficits. He spent time coming up with a plan. When we started working together I could only sing five notes; now I’m able to sing two octaves easily! His talent is impressive…David is a very passionate teacher. As soon as you begin your lesson, his joy of music and voice is only superseded by the love that he has for his students and their progress. He possesses an arsenal of tools and strategies to help his students achieve their vocal goals that can only come from a lifetime of dedication to the art of teaching. He is present, dedicated, and knowledgeable and will only help you on your journey to find your voice.
He was very patient with me. Supportive and had great technique in helping me develop my voice and singing abilities.
He helped me break barriers and made me comfortable to be myself. He explained the voice and how it works and broke it down for me to understand.
I learned a lot under David. I had been stuck in some bad habits before and he helped me visualize the anatomy of singing and helped me root my voice in better habits and solid technique. I'm grateful for the work he did with me, and I think that anyone would be proud to have him as a coach.
He is so perceptive. He knows the anatomy of a singers voice and which exercises are needed to properly build and strengthen your voice.
