About Max
Hi! I'm currently a student at USC, double-majoring in philosophy and creative writing. I'm a native New Yorker who attended the competitive Stuyvesant High School. My focus in tutoring, unlike most tutors and SAT prep companies, is to help students grow their academic capabilities to meet the assessment of the SAT, rather than brute-force their test scores up through repetitive test-taking and re-taking. This is a subtle but profound difference, and means my students are much less likely to get tripped up by that question that looks a little unfamiliar but is actually asking about something they already know.
I scored a 1540 on the SAT on my first attempt. Although I had a private tutor, I felt strongly that she was not helpful because she wasn't looking to evaluate my academic capabilities in their entirety. Rather than tailoring her curriculum to an evaluation of my strengths and weaknesses, her teaching was rigid and devoid of personalization. This experience has strongly influenced my pedagogical technique; I understand that a student's performance on a standardized test is not just a reflection of their test-taking abilities, but of their entire academic capability (otherwise, why would colleges consider them in their admissions processes?)

Typically, I like to start by reviewing a student's report card. I find that by reviewing the student's academic profile holistically, rather than just looking at test scores, I get a much better portrait of their strengths and weaknesses. I also like to speak to the parets to get their perspective on their child's academic capabilities and their learning style.
Find a tutor who is looking at your child and their progress as more than numbers on a graph. Your tutor should be invested not just in increasing test scores, but fostering overall academic developmet.

I sent my son to Princeton Review classes before hiring Max, and while my he came away with a better understanding of TEST-TAKING STRATEGIES(!), it was like he learned almost nothing about the actual material. Max was incredibly patient and really helped my son improve not only his SAT score, but his actual understanding of what was on the test. His score increased by three hundred points!
