About Merrie Lynn

I'm excited to help students gain success through active listening, guided practice, and independent experimentation. My experience with so many students ensures that your student will receive instruction tailored to meet his/her personal needs. Let's work together until they succeed!

The tools I use most often are Zoom, CommonLit.org, Grammarly, Khan Academy, and EdHelper.com. If you know of a great online site that helps your student learn, please let me know!

My firstborn asked to learn to read at age 4. That was in 1995, and I have been teaching ever since! I'm a homeschool mom, a piano teacher, Sunday school director/teacher, and a tutor. I really love to teach!

I have earned a bachelor's degree in English from Liberty University. I have received training from the US Army that allowed me the privilege to teach and tutor students after school.

About the lesson

Let's get to know each other! We're going to have some great conversation.

Show me what you're working on and what your goals are.

Please stop me if you don't understand something.

Ask me questions whenever you need to.

We will work on the areas you struggle with, since that will help you the most.

We can end our time by rescheduing another session.

I have worked with students of all ages and backgrounds. My most recent work is with military-affiliated youth aged 11 through 18. I have experience working with ADD/ADHD students and have a child with Autism.

Make sure your tutor knows exactly what you need-you don't want to waste time or money!

Pick a tutor you like and stick with them until your goals are met.

Be willing to make mistakes in front of your tutor. It shows that you can do the hard work necessary to succeed.

I fondly remember teaching English to a native German speaker through computer literacy. His passion for computers and need to learn English combined beautifully to meet his goal of finishing the school year with his peers.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
For a quick session, ask, "What is the topic and what am I supposed to learn?" and "What exactly do I find confusing or complex?"

For longer or a series of tutor sessions, work backwards to meet your goals. Ask:

What is my final goal? What is my goal for this semester? What is my goal for this week? What is my goal for this lesson or assignment? What is my biggest hurdle in meeting my goal?
