About Melissa

I am pursuing my teaching credentials after years of being a private business owner. I am currently a senior, studying elementary education and special education. I have numerous hours of tutoring with students in the Onalaska, La Crosse, and La Crescent areas.

I sincerely enjoy seeing children thrive. I have three children of my own and have worked with countless children, ranging in ages from newborn to 19 years old. There is nothing in this world that can match the happiness of a child who finally understands and feels proud of themself for their own hard work!

Though I spent many years working with children when I was younger, I began working with adults with developmental disabilities about ten years ago. These gentle souls created a special place in my heart and allowed me to see the shortcomings of the special education system they were exposed to in their youth. My original drive to go back to teaching was to help ensure the next generation would not experience those same challenges. I have since learned that special education is a much-needed aspect of every classroom and that students in the general population are often overlooked if they are not in "enough" need of help. My hope is to help those students thrive as well.

I am a senior at UW-Superior, majoring in elementary education with a minor in special education. I hold an associate's degree in foundational teacher training/ instructional assistant training. I have worked in several school districts as a volunteer, a student, a substitute, and as an instructional assistant for the last 6 years.

in taking on a new student, I generally like to interview the students for likes and dislikes to align the reading materials we use. I begin by assessing the student's reading level and determine comprehension levels. I have no set method as each child demands a different type of intervention, but some common methods I use are vocabulary building, word attack strategies, and decoding strategies. Students often spend so much time trying to figure out or guess a word that they miss the meaning behind the passage they are reading. I focus first on being sure that a student can read the word, then put it to use.

During my training and work history, I have worked with students from many different backgrounds. I have assisted two students who were on the Autism spectrum, one who was reading at 2.5 years below her grade level, students with bipolar disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, Down's syndrome, reading disabilities, Irlen's syndrome, and even a couple students with borderline personality disorder. I am open to all students.

Learning doesn't have to be boring. It can be fun and it is absolutely alright to enjoy it! Look for a teacher who can bring some fun into the lessons and works with you to find ways to infuse your interests into your learning.

In my most recent practicum, I was able to work with a student who had been homeschooled for her entire elementary career. She was enrolled in the local Montessori program and we quickly recognized that she was several grade levels behind. The red tape of drawing up IEPs meant that she would not be getting the intervention she needed for several months, possibly even until the next school year. Though she was meeting with a reading specialist infrequently, I had the opportunity to meet with her twice each week. In a six week period, she improved from 2.5 to 3.8 in her reading and comprehension with the activities I planned. The student had no phonics education and had learned to read strictly through the memorization of words. Our method of intervention was to work on blending sounds to decode words, rather than beginning with phonics. It proved to be a wonderful method for her and a wonderful learning experience for me!
