About Jessica

I am passionate about creating a fun and inclusive space for learning in which all students can succeed! I am a certified special education and general education teacher for grades 1-6 with a masters degree in special education. I have experience teaching math, science, reading, writing, history, art, and theater to students with ASD, ADHD, Dyslexia, and other developmental and intellectual disabilitiies. I love creating individualzed plans and lessons for students to meet them where they are and help them reach their full potential. I have dedicated myself to becoming the best educator I can be in hopes of providing students with accessible and fun learning experiences no matter their learning style or disability. I love to create fun games, activities, and new ways of learning material that may be challening to young students!

I have been working as a tutor and assistant teacher for many years. I got started working in the field when I was in high school and discovered my love for teaching. Throughout college and graduate school, I continued working as a tutor and assistant teacher, finding my own teaching styles and methods. After completing my graduate degree, I worked as a lead special education teacher for two years.

I earned my undergraduate degree from Franklin & Marshall College and my masters degree in special education from Columbia University. I am a certified special education and general education teacher in the state of NY for grades 1-6 and I am currently CPR certified. I have 5+ years of experience tutoring students and 2 years of experience as a lead teacher in a classroom environment.

About the lesson

During our first session, I will take some time to get to know a new student before we start learning together. Typically, this will include chatting with them about things they like to do for fun and what interests them and telling them a bit about myself. I will take time during our first session to talk to a student about what is challening for them about learning and what is fun for them, so that we can create an inidividualized learning plan that helps my student thrive in a way that works for them.

I have experience working with students with developmental delays, intellectual disabilities, TBI, ASD, ADHD, Dsylexia, and behavioral disorders.

To a student looking to hire a special education tutor (or any tutor at all), I would advise that you find a tutor who makes learning fun and manageable! Be honest with that tutor about what you're looking for and what your style of learning is. Take time to get to know each other so that you and that tutor can create a plan that works for you.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What kind of learner are you? Do you learn best through visuals (pictures, videos, demonstrations)? Do you prefer oral learning (talking things through, listening to someone explain a concept and discussing it)? Or do you learn through doing (getting hands-on and working through a topic until you undersand it)? These questions will help a tutor guage the kind of lessons that will be most efficient and effective for you.
